MTV's THE HILLS: An Unexpected Call (Episode 3 Recap)

MTV did a terrible job of setting up the last episode of 'The Hills". In the preview, they showed Lauren listening to a message from Jason Wahler, her ex-boyfriend. So of course we all thought that the "call" would be a major part of this week's episode. Well, guess what? It's not. In fact, all they do is replay the same exact scene from the preview. Really. And it doesn't even come till the very end of the show.

So you probably want to know a little bit of what happens before the big "call", right? The show opens with Lauren and Heidi discussing what Heidi should wear for her first day of work. This time she actually chooses a cute work outfit, which is rather shocking considering that she wore jeans to her interview.

Next we see Lauren, hard at work at Teen Vogue. Well maybe not hard at work, I mean she's just moving clothes from one rack to another, but still. Suddenly she gets a phone call. So she picks up the phone and says.... "Hello?". That's right, she answers her WORK phone with "Hello?" Whatever. Maybe that's just how it's done in the magazine industry.

Anyway, it's Blaine and he asks Lauren to come see him. One thing about Blaine... I think I read somewhere on the internet that he's a freelance writer... and it's highly unlikely that a freelance writer for the magazine would have their own "office". But I guess I can understand why MTV picked him for "The Hills". Blaione is one of those guys that isn't part of management, but yet he pretends like he is... you know, the guy that wants you to think he's in "good" with the higher-ups while the rest of the office makes fun of him behind his back. That's Blaine. Although, I have to admit he's the most interesting male "character" on the show thus far.

So he tells Lauren that she's being sent to NYC to deliver a dress to the almighty Lisa Love. He doesn't know how long she'll be there, it could be a day or five days, although I think he secretly knows it's just an in and out job. So then he says "Go, get out of here." and Lauren runs out. Throughout the entire conversation, all that Lauren can say is "OK"... it's hilarious...

Next we skip on over to Quixote, where Audrina works and we see that Brian (or Retard #2 as I like to call him) has come for an "impromptu" surprise visit. Ok, first of all - Audrina is supposedly the receptionist at Quixote. Yet, when Brian comes in, she jumps up and the first thing she does is offer to show him around. Nevermind that the receptionists job is to answer phones and greet visitors, both of which involve staying at your desk. But of course, who wants to see that when they can see a Maxim shoot in progress instead, right? I love reality TV. After the tour Brian asks Audrina out and she says, "Yes."

Meanwhile, back at the Hillside Villas Heidi is sitting in her living room... reading. A book. Yes, you read that right. I don't know which book she's reading, I'm sure it's one that an MTV set designer placed in their apartment, but whatever. I mean, what other book would she be reading -- she's not in school anymore, right? So, Lauren quickly fills Heidi in and the two begin to look for Lauren's pink suitcase and pick out designer clothes for Lauren to take on her New York trip.

After Lauren leaves, Heidi heads out to the pool (now this is more like it) with Audrina to discuss things like dropping out of school and getting into clubs, because we all know those two things go hand in hand.

On to Heidi's first day of work... Brent has a quick meeting with Heidi basically telling her "The way we work is sink or swim." Then he gives Heidi her first assignment -- stuffing envelopes in the mailroom. Heidi halfheartedly tries to have a conversation with an intern there, but you can see she's thinking -- "Um, when does the party start?" Poor Heidi.

Heidi isn't the only one having a bad day though. Across the country, Lauren lands in New York and rushes over to deliver the dress to Lisa Love. The exchange takes all of 10 seconds, with Lisa barely acknowledging Lauren and telling her she has to get right back on the plane and go back to LA. Awww... maybe Lisa didn't like Lauren's outfit. It kind of looked like an 8th graders graduation dress... from like 1990.

While Lauren is in the car contemplating her "The Devil Wears Prada" moment - complete with Anna Wintour - Heidi calls to complain about how boring her job is. As the two girls exchange job horror stories, I wonder if this is the moment they'll realize that work is work... and not all glamour. Nah...

At the end of Heidi's first day at work, she asks Landon (Brent's 1st assistant) for a quick minute with Brent. Landon gives her a weird look, but motions her back to his office. So next we see Heidi sitting on the couch with some weird Morticia-looking lady and of course Brent sitting at this desk. Heidi tells them that she didn't realize that she would be "working full-time" or "stuffing envelopes" and she thought she thought there would be "events" (i.e. parties). So Morticia tells her that if she wants to be involved in the nightclub aspect she has to "crawl before she walks" and Brent tells her that "this is what the job is". In the end, Heidi has no choice but to accept the fact that she isn't going to be Lizzie Grubman overnight and she tells Landon "See you tomorrow" on the way out.

That night, Brian and Audrina go out on their date and it is booooring. They eat at some restaurant called "Gyu-Kaku" and I swear the most interesting part of the whole scene is the waiter. He tells Brian that "only women" order the Green Apple Soshu and Brian still orders it.
After their date, they go back to Audrina's apartment, where she invites him in to "hang out" for a little bit.

The next morning, Heidi is eating breakfast in bed with her boyfriend, Retard #1, laying next to her. He tries to convince her to lay in bed all day (how ambitious) and even goes as far as to say "Quit". But of course being the career-driven women that Heidi is, she heads off to work anyway.

At Bolthouse, Heidi is in a little staff meeting where Brian gives her the job of doing travel for three Bolthouse employees, including himself. I really wish that they would've shown Heidi trying to figure out how to do this... because remember, up to this point all we've seen her do is lick envelopes. Ooooh, but the best part comes at the end of the meeting when Brent asks Heidi to get him a sandwich. I'm sure that Heidi has probably never fetched a sandwich for anybody in her entire life. I laughed and felt sorry for her... but really what do you expect when you're somebodys 2nd assistant?

Back at the Hillside Villas, Lauren arrives back home from her cross-country trip and listens to the "unexpected call" that MTV hyped up so much. It's nothing more than Jason asking Lauren if she wants to hang out and catch up now that they're both in LA. Lauren gives the answering machine a "What?" look and then heads off to her room to unpack.

At the end of the show we see Lauren staring out the window (and probaby thinking of Jason) during class, while Heidi enters her work schedule into her calendar. I'm assuming this is so she won't forget to come to work, but I could be wrong.

So the previews for next weeks episode show Lauren getting a HUGE floral arrangement from Jason... and of course going out on a date with him. Yes MTV, we'll pretend that we're on the edge of our seats in anticipation as to whether Lauren and Jason will get back together - while back in the real world (thanks to the tabloids) we know that they're a couple... again.

MTV's THE HILLS: "A Change of Plans" (Episode 2 Recap)

I'm going to say something that I may regret later... but I think I actually like Heidi now. She is so interesting to watch. Her carefree attitude and party-loving ways infuse excitement into the show. In fact, at times, Lauren pales in comparison to Heidi.

This episode opens with Lauren and Heidi discussing the "party-crashing" incident. Lauren tries to explain to Heidi why crashing the party and causing a scene was a bad thing. But Heidi's response is simply, "But you didn't get fired, right?"

Next, we see Jordan and Brian playing basketball and discussing girls, namely Heidi and Audrina. I'm sorry, but those two are the biggest dolts and retards that I've seen on reality TV in a long time. Moving on...

Now we're at the Teen Vogue offices where Lauren is pecking away at her computer. Suddenly Blaine enters the room and with a gleam in his eye announces that Lisa Love wants to see Lauren. For a split-second you feel a stab of sympathy for Lauren for having to take orders from a nerd like Blaine. But then everything changes when she goes into Lisa Love's office.

In the premiere episode, Lauren committed the ultimate sin by helping her friends crash the party she was working at and then allowing them to sit in the VIP section that she was supposed to be guarding. So, we all know that there's going to be a big meeting between Lauren and Lisa Love, the West Coast editor of Teen Vogue to discuss her behavior at the party. But despite the fact that Lauren and Whitney both received such stern warnings about being on their best behavior at all times - she gets off with little more than "I do not approve of any alcohol substance abuse" and "Behave" from Lisa. It was almost amusing to watch her being questioned. All Lauren could do was flash a lot of blank looks and mumble a few "Ummm"'s. After the meeting, Lauren skips back to her office to tell Whitney the good news.

So on to the exciting part of the show... Heidi! While lounging at the pool, Heidi calls Audrina at Quixote and lets her know that they're planning on going out to LAX (the club, not the airport). So that night they head to the club, where we see them discussing whether or not they're going to get in as they stand in line. Duh! Of course, they're going to get in!

Anyway, an interesting thing happens as they're entering the club. Audrina recognizes someone standing outside the club and waves. Guess who it is? Heidi's future boss - Brent from Bolthouse. Which makes me wonder, if Audrina is so well-connected, has a job at Quixote and is somehow able to live in a high-class apartment on her own -- why isn't she getting any acting work? Oh wait... she is working... on 'The Hills'.

So once the gang is inside LAX, Heidi manages to score an interview with Brent during a quick chat at the bar, while her dumb ox of a boyfriend wonders out loud where she went to. In fact, the first thing out of his mouth after she tells everyone about the interview is something like "Is he single?"

While Heidi is busy kissing Jordan, singing the "Yeah, yeah yeah" song and doing a little celebration dance, Lauren wants to know what time Heidi plans to leave because they both have school the next day. What a party pooper!

The next day, the two girls head off to their first day at FIDM. On the way to school Heidi tells Lauren, "I'm already planning on ditching my classes." It's only the first day! By the way, did you check out Lauren's purse? I love it!

Then there's a short scene with the two retards in their apartment - nothing happens though. So, back to the girls at school. MTV goes to great lengths to show how studious Lauren is. Look - there she is raising her hand! (Yeah, the teacher was taking attendance) And look - there she is cracking a book open! (For like 2 seconds. )

Meanwhile, Heidi is shown talking on the phone with Audrina ("So, I think Brian likes you.") and playing Solitaire in the student lounge. When she meets up with Lauren later that day she tells her that she didn't go to class because she got lost. I totally sympathize with her because who hasn't gotten lost on their first day of school? Although from what I hear FIDM is a pretty small school, so not sure what her excuse is there.

Next, we see Heidi and Jordan out for a leisurely lunch. They discuss her upcoming interview, dropping out of school and other serious subject like these. Is it just me or does Heidi seem to have trouble getting words out? It's almost as if it hurts her to have to think and talk. At times, shs seems to slur... but maybe I'm reading too much into that.

So the next morning, the girls are in Heidi's room picking out an outfit for her to wear to her interview with Bolthouse. In my opinion, this was time wasted, because Heidi ends up wearing jeans! Heidi takes this opportunity to tell Lauren that if she gets the job she's going to drop out of school. Lauren can't believe this and says, "I thought we moved here so we could go to school together." Um Lauren, a lot of people go to school without their best friend there to hold their hand.

Later that day, Whitney and Lauren are at the Teen Vogue offices doing the intern thing (which as far as I can see involves a lot of sitting around). Anyway, they get onto the subject of Heidi and her job interview and plans for dropping out. Lauren seems like a completely different person as she badmouths her "best friend" and her plans.

Heidi goes to her interview with Brent at Bolthouse. I kind of feel bad for Heidi because it's as if everyone is in on this cruel joke of her getting this job... except for her. She's expecting to be some sort of star PR girl... and we all know she's going to be at the bottom of the totem pole doing all the grunt work. It's like a train wreck waiting to happen.

During the interview, Brent can barely be bothered to look interested. I'm not sure if he's moody, bored or what. He tells Heidi that she would basically be his "2nd assistant". I wonder if he really needs another assistant or if he's just doing it for show. Maybe MTV struck a deal with Bolthouse - who knows? The funniest part of the interview is when Brent says, "I hate drama, so as little drama as possible..." and Heidi has to actually think about this for a second.

After the interview, Heidi calls her "best friend" Lauren to tell her that "I got the job!" Lauren of course offers her congratulations, but the look on her face says something else. Heidi gushes on with statements like "I get a salary!" and "I'm only 19 and I have my dream job." while Lauren practically rolls her eyes. She's rude, condescending and just when you think it can't get any worse, Lauren actually hangs up on Heidi mid-sentence. She just shuts her phone and says, "Weird" to Whitney. Then she starts to hum "Fashion School Dropout" and Whitney joins along. Now it's possible that the two of them have watched Grease one too many times... but did this moment seem to perfect (i.e. scripted) to anyone else?

Meanwhile Heidi is still standing outside the Bolthouse offices and keeps saying "Lauren?" into her phone until she finally realizes what happened. Still, it seems nothing can ruin her good mood, because she skips back to her car, probably thinking of all the hot parties that she's going to be able to get into. Oh, if only she knew what was in store for her...

MTV's THE HILLS: "New City, New Drama" (Episode 1 Recap)

The first episode of The Hills premiered on Wed. May 31st and all I can say is... I'm addicted.

The Hills is brighter, glossier and definitely more exciting than Laguna Beach. I was a bit skeptical about how fun it would be to watch Lauren, since she was never one of my favorites, but the producers and editors of the show have really done a great job. It's all beautiful fantasy, like pictures in a magazine.

The show opens with Lauren moving into her new apartment, which she shares with her friend/roommate, Heidi. She arrives to find Heidi lounging by the pool (which seems to be one of Heidi's favorite activities). Lauren sees the apartment for the first time, which appears to be a very nice 2-story apartment. I just wonder who is paying for the apartment - their parents or MTV.

While they're discussing what size couch to get for their apartment and making plans for the day (more lounging by the pool), Lauren receives a phone call from Teen Vogue asking her to come in for her interview - in 20 minutes. While I suppose it's possible for a company to put you on the spot like that - it just seemed to be too "coincidental".

Lauren makes it to her interview with Teen Vogue editor, Lisa Love, and everything goes well. She stumbles a bit when the editor asks her if she can write well. Lauren answers, "Um... I enjoy writing."

When Lauren gets back from the interview, she finds Heidi at the pool... again. This time she's accompanied by their neighbor Audrina. Audrina seems sweet, but she comes across as not very smart. It could be that she's just nervous in front of the cameras, but considering the fact that she's an aspiring actress you'd think she'd be more comfortable.

That night the gang, Lauren, Heidi, her boyfriend, his roommate, Audrina and another guy friend of theirs all go out to dinner. They discuss such topics as how weird it is to work 40-hour weeks, how going out every night is like a full-time job and of course, Lauren's internship.

Lauren and Heidi both meet with an advisor at FIDM. Lauren's meeting goes like a typical meeting, they discuss internships, curriculum, majors, etc. Heidi's meeting quickly goes downhill, though. She confesses that she often skipped school in favor of shopping. Not only that but she hasn't even looked over the curriculum yet. Then she tells the counselor that all she wants to do is the be the fun, party girl in LA. When the counselor tells her that reaching that kind of position takes a lot of work and experience, Heidi seems surprised. Then she asks Heidi if she'd ever consider working retail. Heidi responds by saying, "You mean actually working the floor? Yeah, I don't think I could do that." The look on the counselor's face is priceless. She asks one more question, "Are you sure this is the right school for you?" Heidi answers, "Yeah." Why wouldn't it be? It's a cool school in LA and her best friend is attending there as well - of course, it's the right school!

Lauren gets a call from Teen Vogue offering her the internship, but only after making her sweat it out a little. She arrives to the Teen Vogue offices and is introduced to Whitney, the other intern. The girls pretend to ignore each other at first, while sizing each other up secretly. They're both led to their work stations and looked over by a fashion editor (who then changes their outfits and accessories a bit) to make sure they look their best for the meeting with the big cheese, Lisa Love.

They then meet with the editor of Teen Vogue, the same one who interviewed Lauren. It doesn't seem like Whitney has ever met her before though... which only makes me think that Lauren's internship has most likely been set up by MTV. The editor gives them a talk about how they represent Teen Vogue and if they ever do anything to embarass the magazine and it gets back to her, they'll be in trouble.

The girls get an assignment of addressing and sending out 500 invitations to the Teen Vogue Hollywood issue party. They bond over licking envelopes and discussing the guest list, both hoping that they'll be asked to attend the party as well. They're asked to work the party, but are told in no uncertains terms that they are there to work and not to party.

Later at home, Heidi asks Lauren if she's going to try to get them in. Lauren answer in typical-Lauren fashion and says she doesn't want to mess up her internship by asking, but you can tell she's praying that Heidi doesn't push the issue. Heidi doesn't push it, but the wheels in her head start turning as she tries to figure out how she can crash the party.

At the party, Lauren gets assigned to guard the VIP section, while Whitney works the door with Brian. Heidi calls Lauren (was there ever any doubt?) to announce that she and her friends are there and can she get them in. Laurens seems incredulous, but again doesn't tell Heidi no. Instead she says, "I'll call Whitney and see what she can do." Whitney is another person who can't seem to say no and tells Lauren that she'll sneak her friends in.

They rush past the red carpet and once inside proceed to make themselves comfortable in VIP even though Lauren tells them that no one is allowed to sit there. Later, we see Lauren sitting down on the job, chatting with her friends. Heidi and her boyfriend get into a fight and cause a scene, but then quickly make up.

Brian, a Teen Vogue staffer, asks her what's up with her friends causing a scene and she blows it off telling him that they were just having a little spat but "Look! They're happy now! See?". Yeah, Lauren, I'm pretty sure he wasn't asking if your friends were okay.

Then Lisa Love makes her way over and asks Lauren, "Who are these people?" Again Lauren doesn't seem to get the fact it isn't a real question, because she introduces her friends to the editor, instead of realizing that she is in trouble. The editor then whispers in Lauren's ear "No one is supposed to be sitting here. We'll talk about it on Monday." and leaves.

Lauren and her friends finally seem to get it - and her friends leave. One thing that they don't show, is the Heidi and her friends drinking. It's obvious they've all had something to drink, some more than others. Yet, none of this is shown onscreen. I remember several parties from Laguna Beach where some of the kids looked suspiciously drunk, too. It seems to be one of MTV's great cover-ups - don't show the kids drinking.

Despite the fact that Lauren seems to have no backbone, I still find myself rooting for her, while secretly wishing that Heidi would suffer some kind of life-altering accident (did I just say that out loud?). Still, it looks like MTV's "The Hills" is going to be a huge hit.

I can't wait for the next episode!

Meet The Cast of MTV's 'The Hills'

Lauren "LC" Conrad's new show, 'The Hills', is set to premiere May 31st on MTV! Hard-core 'Laguna Beach' fans have been anxiously awaiting this moment for a long time.

'The Hills' will follow Lauren in Los Angeles as she attends FIDM and interns at Teen Vogue. All this in preparation for what's sure to be a hot career in the fashion industry.

Of course the show is not just about LC. She'll be joined by a cast of some incredibly beautiful guys and girls. Here's a sneak peek at the cast of 'The Hills':

Heidi
Heidi is Lauren's roommate in LA. The two girls first met in San Francisco where they attended the same art school. Early in the show, Heidi receives an offer from one of Hollywood's premiere party promoters... an offer which may be too good to refuse.

Audrina
Audrina is Lauren and Heidi's neighbor. Like every other girl in LA - Audrina works a 9 to 5 job to pay the bills while dreaming of breaking into modeling & acting. Audrina was not set to originally be part of the cast of the show, but Heidi insisted the producers cast her.

Whitney
Whitney is another intern at Teen Vogue, along with Lauren. Together the two learn what it really means to intern at one of the industry's most popular magazines.

Jordan
Jordan is Heidi's boyfriend, a North Carolina native, hoping to break into the modeling, acting and music business while in LA. Pretty ambitious, don't you think? The problem is this guy spends more time partying than hitting the pavement trying to get work.

Brian
Brian is Jordan's best friend and roommate. He also happens to be the opposite of his best friend. With razor-sharp focus and resolve, Brian lands role after role, gig after gig. His only problem is trying to avoid being set up on random dates by the resident matchmaker, Heidi.

and finally...

Lauren
Lauren was the queen of 'Laguna Beach'. But will she be able to make it in LA without her close-knit circle of friends and family? Will she be able to make a name for herself as more than just an ex-Laguna star and party girl? And the question everyone wants to know... how is it she got back together with ex-boyfriend, Jason Wahler, her Laguna Beach Season 2 co-star?

You'll have to watch "The Hills" Wednesdays @ 10 PM on MTV to find out!!
